Becoming a Surrogate Mother & the Intended Parent Relationship
Every surrogate – intended parent relationship is wholly unique. Some surrogates and intended parents want to become close friends, while others prefer more of a business relationship with minimal contact during the process. It is important to understand your expectations for your relationship with the intended parents before embarking on the surrogacy journey.
When considering becoming a surrogate mother you should outline what your relationship expectations are for before, during and after the birth. Before becoming a surrogate mother you should consider the following:
- Is it important for you to meet the intended parents in person, or is a phone call sufficient enough for you?
- When it comes to communication, are you comfortable working with the intended parents directly, or would you rather go through your selected agency?
- How often do you want to communicate (daily, weekly, only after doctors’ appointments, etc.)?
- What method of communication are you most comfortable with, video chats, phone calls, or email only?
- How open are you to having the intended parents attend doctors’ appointments, ultrasounds etc.?
- Who do you want to be present during the birth?
- Do you want to remain in close contact with the intended parents and the child after the birth, or are you comfortable with receiving simple updates such as on birthdays and holidays?
